I think it may be because they are quicker to update their maps. As you can see from this site: they are already at the 2014 version. BMW jumped ship from Navteq to Tele Atlas, again now TomTom. I find that they seem to be dated a year behind. From what I know Toyota takes it's data from a few sources, and then confirms the data itself. I believe Tele Atlas has been purchased by TomTom. There were two manufacturers of maps that I knew of: Navteq and Tele Atlas. From my experience the different manufacturers have different 'theories' on how to produce a map update, as opposed to a software/firmware update. My GPS still hangs when I drive on roads not mapped, and some of these roads have been open for 2+ years. The bad news is that mine has the same 12.23 version shown in the video (and I'm pretty sure this was the version in the 2011).
